I HEART my Empregado

So I bet you wondering… what the hell is an empregado and why on earth do I heart mine?

Well an empregado is a person who you hire to help around the house.  What we, in the states might call a domestic helper or maid.  This person might cook, clean, run errands, wash clothes (by hand…most people do not have washing machines), cart water or do other random things.

In Moz it is pretty common for people to have an empregado (male) or empregada (female) and for Peace Corps volunteers, it is even more common.  It is a win-win situation.  The volunteer gets help around the house, as tasks around the house can take significantly longer here and are much more difficult, while also helping someone out financially, thus stimulating the economy.

My empregado is great! He washes my clothes once a week, cleans inside my house a few times a week and takes away my trash.  Because he lives next door he comes over everyday to see if I need any help with any other random things.  An example of said random thing would be me calling for him to come over at 8pm to kill a mouse that was not only in my house, but in my bedroom.  He came running over and killed the mouse with a broomstick and then removed it from my room.  I am still traumatized.  Can’t even talk about it.

So now you all know why I heart my Emprogado!  Everyone should be so lucky!
