Because I will be in Mozambique for the next 2 years as a Peace Corps volunteer I thought it might be helpful to explain a few things about the Peace Corps….just so we are all on the same page. The Peace Corps was created by President Jack Kennedy in 1961 (just another reason LOVE the Kennedys) and will be celebrating its 50th anniversary this coming spring.
The Peace Corps has 3 major objectives:
1. 1. Provide technical assistance or help to host countries.
2. 2. Promote a better understanding of Americans on the part of the people served.
3. 3. Promote a better understand of other peoples on the part of Americans.
So the Peace Corps is more than just helping people. It is also about becoming part of a community and engaging with and learning from peoples of various cultures and ways of life. This sharing of culture is extremely important and necessary if the overall goal of the Peace Corps, which is peace and friendship, is to be accomplished.
And ps you don’t need to be in the Peace Corps to engage in cross cultural relationships! You can do it wherever you are! And I encourage it. Learn about a culture that is different you’re your own. And in turn share your own culture or way of life with someone else. Trust me it is a very fulfilling experience.
